The Great Enclosure at Great Zimbabwe

The Great Enclosure at Great Zimbabwe

The picture above of the wall of the Great Enclosure at Great Zimbabwe National Monument, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Zimbabwe, gives some idea of the enormity and scale of the high wall.   The Great Enclosure, has walls as high as 36 feet (11 m) extending approximately 820 feet (250 m), making it the largest ancient structure south of the Sahara Desert.

Great Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe means ‘house of stone’)  was once an 11th century trading post and artefacts have been found on the site which were Chinese, Persian and Syrian, and would have been traded in exchange for gold and other minerals found in the area.

This is another view from inside the Enclosure, where two tall men are dwarfed by the height of the walls, which have been standing for many centuries, even though they were built without any mortar.

Fascinating, isn’t it, how such sturdy, intricate structures were built so long ago without today’s modern tools and equipment!

Those walls are so high!! It must have taken them quite some time to build it!

    Impressive scale-wise, as well as structurally 🙂 ♥ ❤
