Cee’s Which Way Challenge : 30 Nov 2016

Signpost on Donovan Castle walk

George the Sky, Dunmanway

This is my entry for Cee’s Which Way Challenge, from a hike last Sunday called the Glenalochy walk in West Cork.   The sign above shows the way to the top of the mountain, and the house of George – George was an old farmer who lived from about 1900 to 1950 on a few acres right at the top of the mountain, his house was quite a few miles from the nearest village, Dunmanway, and of course he probably walked or cycled everywhere, in all kinds of weather.    He became known as ‘George the Sky’ because of the remoteness of his house.

The walk was very beautiful, a bit strenuous, but there were great views, even if we didn’t go as high as George’s house, and we came across a lake half way up the mountain, and magnificent views.

At  the start and end of the hike we passed Castle Donovan – a castle that has been around for almost 600 years, and is/was the seat of the O’Donovan clan.   For any of you with Irish ancestors, you can read more about this castle here, who knows, it might be part of your ancestry!
