Norm’s Thursday Doors :

My doors this week come from the fabulous Muckross House in Killarney, Co. Kerry.  This is a 19th century house built on the shores of the Lakes of Killarney, with magnificent gardens and old trees.   The house was built in 1839, and extensive work was done on the house and gardens in preparation for the visit of Queen Victoria in 1861 .

This is the main entrance to the house, which is open to the public, and furnished in the original style – a very grand mansion, but probably not so grand for those living ‘downstairs’ and having to carry everything up two or three flights of stairs from the kitchens in the basement.

And these are some of the doors from the back of the house – probably a storeroom.

Thursday Doors : More Blues

Kioni Island, Greece

There are many doors in this building at Kioni village in Ithaca, Greece.  Of course the beautiful ‘Greek Blue’ on the doors and shutters really stands out and makes the house very interesting.    I would love to be there right now, soaking up the sunshine!

Thursday Doors : 28 April 2016 : Budapest Doors

Budapest in Hungary has fantastic buildings, most of them in perfect symmetry, and most of them with wide doors, dating back to the time of horses and carriages, when the doors had to be wide enough for the horse and carriage to drive through to the courtyard, and possible stables at the back.   In fact, I have seen cars driving through some of these very wide doors,to their own private parking space!   As I took so many photos of doors for Norm, I am attaching some in a gallery.

You will notice that a lot of the doors are flanked by statues, holding up the floors above.  Actually, a lot of the statues were of women – who says we are the weaker sex!!

Don’t forget to vist Norm for more Thursday doors

Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela

Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela

This very intricate door is one we saw at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London recently.   It is a replica of the entrance to the Cathedral of St James, at Santiago de Compostela, very well known to anyone who has walked the Camino in Spain, and below is some more detail of the door.

The wooden shutters and balcony on this house have been given a little Tender Loving Care to spruce them up, in contrast to the house below, which has been neglected and left unloved.

Ornate doors in a welcoming red

Red is a  colour that always stands out, especially on a door, it says to me ‘Welcome, come on in’   What do you think?

Just Open the Door and Come on In!

On my travels around Cork City I came across some interesting doors, old ones, colourful ones, and ornate ones.   Some of these buildings have become restaurants and cafes, and it is nice to see that the good features have been preserved.
