Daily Post Photo Challenge : Solitude

Shehy Mountains on a cloudy day

Shehy Mountains on a cloudy day

The mountains are a good place to be alone, in solitude, unless of course like me you are part of a 50 strong group on a cold wintry day, all huddled together for company from the biting wind!  There always a chance to stride out on your own though, and enjoy the scenery of the distant hills, and a few isolated cottages in the distance.

Snow on the distant hills.

And if you don’t want to go hiking, there’s always the call of the sea on a calm day.

Kinsale, Co Cork

Child size door

We came across this door one evening while walking home from a friend’s house in Kinsale, Co Cork.   It seems it is still a functioning door, but I wonder why it is so small?   Maybe it was built for shorter people…or even the Little People?

Head on over to Norm’s Thursday doors for some more interesting posts.

Convent, Kinsale

Old Convent door, Kinsale

This old abandoned door is part of the old convent in Kinsale, sadly now no longer a school but behind these doors there is a lot of activity and redevelopment going on.    The convent started originally in 1844 and was a school run by the Sisters of Mercy for almost 150 years, until it closed in the 1980s.

There is a lot of interesting information and old photos of the convent here on Abandoned Ireland, luckily the interiors were all photographed and documented before the developers moved in with their ‘wrecking balls’ – now there are a lot of modern houses and apartments going up behind these convent walls.     The exterior walls and old doors are being preserved, for now anyway, which is a good thing.

Check out more doors at Norm’s site here.

Kinsale Regatta

Finish line in sight, home made rafts

The two crews are neck and neck coming up to the finish line in the Raft Race during Kinsale Regatta yesterday…which one will win the dramatic finish (and not get too wet in the process)!
