Tuesdays of Texture : Week 2 of 2017

Mainz memorial

Mainz, Germany

This week again I have a little something from our trip to Mainz in Germany – the sculptors were very busy with this one that we came across in one of the main squares, while we kept warm with some Gluhwien  This sculpture is called the carnival sculpture, or The Tower of Fools

Another interesting sculpture we came across is this modern art piece in the Town Square, which my grandchildren enjoyed playing around.

Ice Sculptures and Fairy Tales

Ice Sculpture at Mainz, Germany

One of the Three Kings

I hope you are all dressed warmly!   Come and enjoy the wonderful snow and ice sculptures at Eiswelt Mainz in Germany.   We really enjoyed our visit with our grandchildren,  though by the time we got to the end, we were feeling a bit chilly and were very glad of the coffee and hot chocolate in the warmth of the cafe!  Next time we will wear a few extra layers!

There were so many different sculptures  – cathedrals, cartoon characters,  nativity scenes, fairy tales, chairs, furniture, even the Grim Reaper!  Check out this great gingerbread man!

A Summer Visit to the Summer Palace

Schonbrunn Palace

A busy summer day at the Summer Palace

This is the Summer Palace outside Vienna, the Schonbrunn Imperial Palace.  It’s the summer palace of the Hapsburg family, and the land has been in their family since 1569.   The wife of the Emperor Ferdinand had a palace built here in 1696, and nowadays it is a very popular tourist attraction, with some of the rooms in the palace open to the public, together with the magnificient maze, the gloriette, amazing sculptures and waterfalls like the photo below, with Neptune and his nymphs enjoying the waters

There are so many different and interesting buildings and sculptures to see at the Gardens that we spent almost a whole day wandering around, taking lots of photos, enjoyed a gelato and coffee at the cafe in the Gloriette and caught a tram home, happy to sit and rest our aching feet at the end of the day.

Angels in Prague

Prague hotel

Angels and Gargoyles

Prague is a city where we found lots of sculptures, carvings, statues and magnificent buildings.   Everywhere we went, we came across another reason to stop and take a photograph – it is known as the city of 100 spires, and the old town is full of baroque buildings, Gothic churches (with lots of gold) and a medieval Astronomical Clock.   Even our hotel lobby was another example of the many carvings of Angels, Gods and Gargoyles to be found everywhere.

Have you visited?    I will be posting some of the many sights we found over the next while – my camera was worn out from the weight of all those buildings and statues!

Weekly Photo Challenge : Broken

The very intricate carving on this pulpit looks a bit the worse for wear, and a little bit broken, probably because of its age!   It is a plaster cast of a pulpit designed by Giovanni Pisano way back in 1302.

Another ancient monument, which may look like a heap of broken ruins, is something that has also stood the test of time.    Great Zimbabwe, which was built between the 11th and 13th centuries is  the largest collection of ruins in Africa.

Even if something is broken, it can still be a thing of beauty
