Travel Theme : Cities

Cities,  like people, come in all sizes and shapes, some are inland, some are by mountains, and some by the sea.    My city of choice for this challenge is Cape Town, which is protected by the majestic Table Mountain, seen above with some cloud cover (sometimes called the tablecloth).   The city is also surrounded by the sea, in fact the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean meet  near the Cape of Good Hope, not too far from Cape Town.

The triumph and tragedy of Searching for Sugar Man – Telegraph

if you ever get a chance to see ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ watch it, it is a brilliant documentary about a great musician.

Searching for Sugar Man is a brilliant testament to the briefly glittering talents of its director and star

In 2006, an aspiring young documentary maker called Malik Bendjelloul left his job at Swedish state TV and went to Africa in search of material for his first feature. He eventually found himself in Cape Town, where a record store owner told him the story of Sixto Rodriguez, a brilliant Mexican-American singer-songwriter whose two albums, released in the early 1970s, had unexpectedly bombed in the US — but, by some magic, later found an audience in apartheid South Africa, where they sold hundreds of thousands of copies. As a consequence, Rodriguez became more popular than Elvis in the country, and inspired a generation of anti-establishment songwriters.

For years, the store owner…

A Photo A Week : Flight

Sailing way above the sea.

Weekly Photo Challenge : Threes

On a trip to South Africa last year, we went to the Saturday Farmers’ market near Knysna.   This market is a great gathering place for all the locals, both local stall holders who sell food, flowers, vegetables, arts and crafts, jewellry, and anything else you care to mention, and the local people who come to browse and buy, and to

use the opportunity to catch up with all friends and family.

There was a great variety of food on offer, and lovely teas and coffee, but as you can see, in the end a lot of us went with the old favourite – the full Irish South African!

Weekly Photo Challenge : Infinite

Mountains, and their infinite majesty have fascinated and challenged man for many centuries.  We want to gaze on their beauty, and climb the highest mountain, or dive into the deepest sea.

These photos were taken in the Outeniqua mountains of South Africa, a mountain range that is not too far from the Garden Route, north of George, and not too far from Mossel Bay and Knysna.

And in the picture below, taken in the Matobo Hills National Park in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, the view of the granite balancing rocks and hills, seems to go on forever.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Good Morning

What could be better than having breakfast outdoors at a Farmers Market in Knysna, South Africa, with the sun shining, good friends all around and fresh food straight from the farm.

breakfast time, and time to catch up with the latest happenings!
