My photos for this challenge Silhouette are two very different ones. The first is a stormy scene over Glengarriff in West Cork, judging by the dark clouds, the heavens were about to open, but we were safely indoors sipping a coffee and enjoying some home cooked food!

My second photo is the Hammering Man outside the exhibition centre in Frankfurt. This sculpture is a 21 metres tall moving man, and was installed in 1991 for the opening of the exhibition centre.

The weekly photo challenge has moved from Fridays to Wednesdays, so here goes for this week’s Shadow.
These photos were taken at sunset in the town of Mainz in Germany, the tower with scaffolding is the main cathedral, which is about 1200 years old, and still standing!

Mainz Cathedral
These are the very impressive doors of the Romanesque Cathedral in Mainz, Germany. This building is over 1000 years old, and was built around the year 990, in the 10th century. It’s hard to cast my mind back that far, and hard to believe that this building is still standing and being used as a Cathedral, as originally intended. The doors are very tall, made of bronze, and date back to the 11th century.
Here are some views of the outside of the Cathedral, there was some repair work and scaffolding going on when we visited, but it is a very large and interesting building, as you can see.

Mainz, Germany
This week again I have a little something from our trip to Mainz in Germany – the sculptors were very busy with this one that we came across in one of the main squares, while we kept warm with some Gluhwien This sculpture is called the carnival sculpture, or The Tower of Fools
Another interesting sculpture we came across is this modern art piece in the Town Square, which my grandchildren enjoyed playing around.

One of the Three Kings
I hope you are all dressed warmly! Come and enjoy the wonderful snow and ice sculptures at Eiswelt Mainz in Germany. We really enjoyed our visit with our grandchildren, though by the time we got to the end, we were feeling a bit chilly and were very glad of the coffee and hot chocolate in the warmth of the cafe! Next time we will wear a few extra layers!
There were so many different sculptures – cathedrals, cartoon characters, nativity scenes, fairy tales, chairs, furniture, even the Grim Reaper! Check out this great gingerbread man!

Frankfurt Church Door
This is a photo of the Old St Nicholas Church in thecentre of Frankfjurt, an old 13th century church, which has survived many disasters over the centuries, including two World Wars, and is still functioning today, with lots of bells and carillons which are a big attraction for tourists.
