There can only be one dance..Riverdance with Michael Flatley, which stunned and amazed the world when it was first performed as the ‘interval entertainment’ during a break in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994 in Dublin.
It still gives me goosebumps to watch it and to remember the first time I saw it. I was living in Harare, Zimbabwe, and was sitting late one night when everyone else had gone to bed, searching for the Eurovision on our satellite dish. At that time satellite dishes were new to Zimbabwe, our dish was about 6 meters in diameter, and we had to hire a crane to position it behind our garage. We lived on a hill and according to the ‘experts’ at the time, that was the best place to pick up a signal. Picking up a signal had to be done manually with the control, and every time you tried to fine tune the dish, it moved a fraction, and made a noise. Eventually I found a snowy picture , just before the intermission, and watched the very first airing of THE Dance, it might have been a little fuzzy, but the sound was great, and my reaction afterwards was the same as the audience, a very big WOW!
I hope you enjoy this version with the lovely Jean Butler and a very young Michael Flatley, the picture is not a bit fuzzy, unlike my first viewing, but it is still mesmerising.
Where were you when you first saw Riverdance?

Reblogged this on Janet’s thread and commented:
When this performance took place I was either in Dublin or Nairobi Kenya. Unaware of this epic taking place.

I first saw Riverdance on TV. I’m not sure exactly when that was, but I was soooooo impressed with it! Then a group toured the US and I saw it in an outdoor theater in Washington, DC. Simply awesome, both the music and dancing!

Took my youngest daughter to see Riverdance last summer at the Gaiety. Was not nearly as electric as the show with Jean Butler and Michael Flately, but it was wonderful all the same!

Yes. The two of them together were electric, but the show is full of energy, and gives you a good feeling.

It’s still taking the world by storm. And has made millions for the creators and main dancers, to be a good/great dancer and to get into one of these troupes is the utmost.
